One of the most popular oracles people consult is the tarot. Many seek out fortunetellers to have their life explained and hopefully gain some insight into the future; fortunetellers often use the tarot. Instead of paying to having someone else read a spread for you, consider learning tarot spreads yourself. If you can learn the different spreads and understand the cards, you will be able to get a more accurate reading for yourself.
Here are the three best tarot card layouts for beginner to use when learning tarot spreads.
It is important, very important actually, that you become familiar with your tarot cards. You need to have a basic understanding of the meaning of each card and the roll of the numbers on each card while reading tarot cards. Take the time to learn the cards and develop a connection with your deck.
Learning tarot spreads beginning with the Three Card Spread
Starting with the most basic, yet very powerful, three-card spread. Think of the question you want to ask the tarot. What you will do is shuffle your deck. While you are shuffling, you are thinking about your question. Once you have shuffled the cards to your satisfaction, divide the stack into three separate piles still concentrating on your question. With your question clear in your mind, you will chose one card from each pile and lay them out one by one in front of you. Once you have them laid out, turn them face up.

- To read this, the card on the left deals with the past that is associated with your question.
- The card in the middle represents the “now” of the situation. What is happening now.
- The card on the right tells you the most likely future outcome.
Now, the cards are not going to tell you yes or no, instead they are going to offer you guidance on how to handle the situation at hand.
Learning tarot spreads next with the Celtic Cross
The Celtic Cross is a reading that goes more in depth than the 3-card spread. Again, this is a powerful spread. It requires the use of only ten cards; however, you must lay the cards out in specific places. Again, shuffle your deck while you are thinking of the question you are seeking guidance on. Now you are going to draw out 10 cards. From the first card that you draw to the tenth card, you must lay them out in the following fashion:
- Row one: Draws four and ten
- Row two: Draws five, one (with draw two laid cross-wise on top), six and nine
- Row three: Draw number eight
- Row four: Draws three and seven
Once laid out, you start reading tarot cards in the following manner:
- Card one: This is your foundation card. When reading for yourself, it represents you and the basic theme of this reading.
- Card two: Represents the current obstacles in your way.
- Card three: This card stands for your subconscious. This card is the card that you should spend time thinking about. It is the key to you unlocking the door that is blocking your resolution. Here you will find the issue that you truly need to address to move forward.
- Card four: This card is all about your potential depending on the choices you’ve already made regarding the matter in question.
- Card five: This one is all about what has happened in the past.
- Card six: Events that will unfold in the very near future.
- Card seven: Influences surrounding the issue at hand. This is where you confront your fears.
- Card eight: Insight about how others perceive you.
- Card nine: Relates to your fears, as well as how they might affect your hopes for the future.
- Card ten: Suggests an answer to your original question or how things will turn out.
The Spread of Change (Five Card Spread)
This spread is great while learning tarot spreads. You can get insight about a changes that you are currently going through. Here you will be able to see the current situation, how the past is affecting it, and what a change would lead to or what change would need to be made for you to attain the outcome you are after. Again, as with every drawing you are going to shuffle your deck, while you are thinking about the situation you need insight into. You are going to draw five cards and lay them out in the following fashion.
- Top row: Card 3
- Middle row: Cards one, five and two
- Bottom row: Card four
Align each row at the left.
The meaning of the cards
- Card one: The current situation
- Card two: How the past affects the situation
- Card three: The future
- Card four: Represents why the person is asking for help
- Card five: The future or goal of the situation
These are the three best tarot spreads for beginners to use while learning tarot spreads. They are all powerful and can provide you with valuable insight into whatever area of your life you are seeking guidance.
